  i got it 3 years ago which was a little before i started using steam... i have legit gold edition though. im 95% sure i bought it off amazon though. the cd-key is set up like this ****-****-****-****

  Worse case it goes on sale pretty regularly at 75% off and you can just buy it again for the price of a happy meal.

  i'd rather not as then the boxed edition of mtw2 would go to waste as i rarely use dvd rom games.. i sent a ticket to steam 2 days ago but like usual they are taking their time on each one.. i looked through my purchase history and found that i did get medieval 2 total war and rome total on amazon still waiting for steam support to reply

  the only way Steam will give support is if you bought it from them, I myself have just bought the same version from Amazon and get a BSOD after the launch page, I know it a graphics problem with the game as I run Napoleon Total War and Shogan 2 Total War without any problems, I was looking on here to see if anyone had reported the same problem without any success, looks like I may have to wait til it goes on offer on here again and purchase it direct from steam to get to play

  Only games that support steamworks have a steam key that works with Steam, in fact, it's required to use Steam. The first Total War game to support this was Empire Total War. All other retail games only have keys that allows you to play the game on the disc.

  Also, problems like that are issues with the game itself so you should try to look for help with the developers, in this case CA. Even if you bought that game on Steam and it had the same issues they still wouldn't be able to help you.

  Today, like i do every few months, i tried using my retail key on Steam, and it actually worked this time.
  Give it another go. Previously, retail keys simply didn't work on Steam. Medieval 2 isn't a Steamworks game, so the only way you could previously get it on Steam was by buying it there.
  However, that's changed now. I think it could be to do with the Medieval 2 multiplayer host being retired (GameSpy), and since (i think at least) Steam has now taken over the multiplayer aspect, you can now register retail keys on Steam.
